Edam (Dutch pronunciation: ⓘ) is a. Grote Kerk or St. Nicholaaskerk, of cathedral dimensions, was probably built at the beginning of the 15th Century. In both 1602 and 1699 the church suffered extensive fires after lightning strikes to the tower. Consequently, when rebuilt (in 1701) the height of the tower was significantly reduced.

De kerk liep grote schade op bij de stadsbrand van 1457. Zoals ook blijkt uit de fasering van de kapconstructies heeft men eerst het hoofdkoor en het Mariakoor hersteld en geruime tijd later het transept, waarna de rest van het schip volgde. Het Mariakoor werd versmald ten gunste van het driebeukige koor en opnieuw gewijd (1462).

De Grote of St.-Nicolaaskerk van Edam is met een lengte van 88 meter en een breedte van 35,5 meter de grootste hallenkerk van West-Europa (een hallenkerk is een kerk met zijbeuken die ongeveer even hoog zijn als de middenbeuk). De toren die oorspronkelijk 70 meter hoog was werd na de grote brand van 1602 niet hoger opgebouwd dan 42 meter.
